Hands On Heritage days - May 30 th & 31 st at Princetown, Dartmoor

Two days of events, demonstrations, and hand on activities for all ages to enjoy are being held on Bank Holiday Monday 30th May and Tuesday 31 st May to celebrate Dartmoor's rich cultural heritage.  These will be based at and around Princetown and organised by the Dartmoor National Park Authority.

The wide range of activities planned will include archaeological excavations in sand dig boxes; finds identification by the Devon Finds Liaison Officer, quizzes, a treasure hunt; and an interactive literary walk in pursuit of  legendary locations such as the Grimpen Mire which featured in Conan Doyle's  Hound of  the Baskervilles .

There will be demonstrations of flint knapping, pot making, stone walling and stone splitting.  A Focus on Heritage photographic exhibition will be on display at the High Moorland Visitor  Centre, plus a presentation of oral history recordings of life in Princetown with opportunities to contribute further to these.    Story Tellers will  be entertaining with  tales with a Dartmoor theme and the Dartmoor Prison Museum will  be laying on special events over the two days including demonstrations by the Prison sniffer dogs and guided walks to the American and French Prisoner of War cemeteries.

A choice of self guided and guided walks will be taking place, with a Vintage bus laid on to transport walkers to walk start/finish points. A variety of heritage based stalls will also be present, these will be organized by local groups.

All events will be free.

Most walks don't require booking - just turn up and pay the guide at the start - but there are a few which, due to popularity or organisational difficulties, must be booked in advance.

We regret that dogs cannot be allowed in view of the potential hazard to livestock.

To book a walk, please telephone Princetown (01822) 890414 [international = 44 1822 890414], and give details of the walk you wish to join and your name and telephone number.
