Beacon Villages Journal

Well, summer did arrive at last, didn't it? It was particularly fortunate for the Village Open Gardens. In the middle of the week before, we had a heavy downpour of rain which really brought the gardens on a treat. The day of the opening, in fact, started very hot indeed but later turned just pleasantly warm. And the gardens themselves responded magnificently to the weather.

It is a few years since I have been round all the open gardens but this year I visited all 15 of them with my camera. There is a great variation of the kind of garden exhibiting - from the small semi to the village manor and yet I can honestly say that each and every one had something worth showing to a wider audience and I only hope that my photos do them all justice.

Have a look at Open Gardens and see for yourselves!

This was the last major event in the area that I had to cover for this site. Of course, each year, there is the latest edition of the same event and I may well re-visit some of these as I get time. What I would like to see, however, is more local participation of the kind that Helen Cooper's new web site represents.

This is not another page of this web site but a link to her own local site. all I have done is to offer some guidance and provided some free web space. Helen, a student at Okehampton College, has done the rest. Without wishing to deny her talent, I would venture to say that if she can do it, many more of you in the community can do it as well.

If anyone else in the area would like to build your own community web site to link to this one and would like some advice, help or encouragement, please e-mail me and I would be delighted to help.

One of the things that is becoming more and more available and so helping people to produce their own thing is the digital camera. You don't have to pay a fortune for one, prices are coming down all the time, and they do allow you to benefit from the only way to learn - by experience.

I recently told someone that they had not yet taken a 'good' picture of their daughter. this was easy to rectify with a digital camera because it costs nothing (but time) to take a whole memory card full of photos from different angles, with different backgrounds, far and close up - and then choose the best half a dozen.

All that is needed then is some rudimentary tidying up (cropping and adjusting lightness, contrast and colour) to end up with something that you are very pleased with and may even want to share with others on a web site.
